Carey, Ohio, is located in Crawford Township in the northwest part of Wyandot County, which is in the northwest portion of the state. The village had 3,901 residents at the time of the 2000 census.

The Village of Carey was laid out in 1843 by R.M. Shuler and W.M. Buell on ground which they owned. The Indiana, Bloomington & Western Railroad ran through the town, and the founders named the town for local resident John Carey, president of the railway and a person who was interested in the success of the town.

This was two years before the organization of Wyandot County. The territory around Carey was wild and uncultivated. The same year John Houck erected a hotel, the first business in the town. Buell erected a building for a general store and by 1845 there were several such stores. Among these early merchants were R.W. Reed, D.M. Carey, H.J. Starr and David Straw.

The town continued to grow and other businesses were established. Carey was incorporated in 1858. The Carey Times was first published in 1873. The Peoples Bank was started in 1886. The first school had been erected in 1843 and a number of churches were soon organized. In 1894 a waterworks system was installed and in 1897 the city installed an electric plant combining it with the waterworks.
