Shirley Gibson

Shirley R. Gibson, 76, Carey, formerly of Tiffin, lost her battle with cancer on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, at 10:09 a.m. at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay, with her family by her side.
Born in Fostoria on Sept. 12, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Al Yentzer and Thelma (McHaffie) Little. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Glen Little.
She was married to John Distel and they had four children. She married Ron Gibson on Sept. 2, 1990, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 2, 1991.
Surviving are her four children, Todd (Kelly) Distel, Carey; Brett (Anita) Distel, Rapid City, S.D.; Lesley (Mike) Stapf, Lakeville, Minn.; and Eric (Dawn) Distel, Tiffin; 12 grandchildren, Amanda, Derek, Caleb D., Sherilyn, Brooke, Hanna, Brandon, Alex, Dylan Caleb P., Mia and Tyson; two great-granddaughters, Breanna and Claire; four sisters, Trina Stickdorn, Glenda Messerle, Peggy Pitzer and Mickey Sexton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte.
Shirley was a 1958 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School. She was retired from Hayes-Albion where she was a very active and proud UAW member and served as a union steward. She had also owned One-Stop Carry Out in Carey.
Shirley loved her family and was happiest when surrounded by them. She enjoyed traveling and the history wherever she stopped. Two of her favorite places were Hawaii and Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota.
She was a loving homemaker who worked very hard to provide for her family. She was a very strong willed and intelligent person who always stood firm by her beliefs. Shirley loved politics and was a loyal Democratic supporter.
A gathering of friends and family was held Sept. 9 at the home of her son, Eric Distel, Tiffin.
A private graveside service will be at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery, Tiffin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
