John Lay
John D. Lay, 78, of rural Findlay, passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay. He was born on April 22, 1939, to the late Frank Clayton and Anna Maxine (Walters) Lay. He married Judith Ann Markley in March of 1956. She preceded him in death. He then married Kay Francis Ewing Dick on May 29, 1999, and she survives in Findlay.
John worked for most of his career in the stone quarry business and owned his own blasting company, Northern Ohio Explosives, for a few years. He finished his career working for Austin Powder Company and retired in 1999.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was an avid outdoorsman, a master at sporting clays and a registered skeet shooter. He had a gift for working with his hands and enjoyed crafting wood and tooling leather. He also loved watching his grandchildren play sports and all of their activities.
John is survived by his granddaughter, Timyka Tanner (Michael) and Kay’s daughters, Heidi Poteat (Rick), Stephanie Barger (Eric), and Kimberly Brunner (Scott); grandson, Cory Prescott (Shawna); granddaughter, Rachael Etienne; sisters, Janine Faber and Marita Cole; brothers, Donald Lay and David Lay; and multiple great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both sons, Steven John and David Allen; sisters, Deanna Miller and Lorita Lay; a brother, Larry Lay; and a granddaughter, Jamie Lay.
Friends will be received on Friday, Jan. 5, from 2-4 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at Kirkpatrick-Behnke Funeral Home, Findlay. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Wilkerson officiating. Burial will be scheduled at a later date.
