Karl Stephan

Karl W. Stephan, 80, of Carey, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at 2:45 a.m. at his residence.
Born in Marietta, on Aug. 28, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles Louis and Dorothy Clarice (Dodd) Stephan.
He is survived by his bride of 57 years, Frances Lorraine (Wright) Stephan. They were married on Sept. 3, 1960, in Marietta.
Also surviving are their four children, Lee Ann (James) Smarkel, Findlay; Karl Wallace (Stephanie) Stephan II, Carey; Jane (Bill) Bricley, Upper Sandusky; Summer (Jerry) Fredritz, Carey; eight grandchildren, Haley Marie Miller; Abby and Sarah Smarkel; Christopher, Noah and Haleigh Stephan; Austin Hertel and Mason Fredritz; and a sister, Charlene Stephan.
Karl graduated from Marietta High School and Marietta College. He spent the next 30 years teaching at various schools in Ohio. He spent his last 18 years at Carey High School, retiring in 1990. He coached many different sports throughout his career. He loved basketball and was an assistant coach at Carey High School 10 years beyond retirement. He also had a love for music and theatre. He was in many plays and musicals in the surrounding area, as well as choir director at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. In retirement, Karl painted for many people in Carey and worked at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home for 20 years. An avid sports fan, he loved watching the Carey Blue Devils, OSU Buckeyes and Cincinnati Bengals and Reds.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 12, from 2-7 p.m. at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carey, and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. The funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. William Schultz officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
