John O’Flaherty

John Paul O’Flaherty, of Carey, died on his 89th birthday, Sunday, Feb. 11, 2016, at his residence.
Born in Carey, he was the son of the late Henry and Armella (Frisch) O’Flaherty.
John married Frances E. “Frankie” Ewing on Nov. 21, 1959. She preceded him in death on July 9, 2009.
He is survived by 11 children, James (Tonya) O’Flaherty, Carey; Janet Moes, Sycamore; Karen (Scott) Haynes, Sydney; Keith O’Flaherty, Carey; Diane Poe, Dunkirk; Barbara (Thomas) Krout, Carey; Douglas (Johnnie Davis) O’Flaherty, Columbia, S.C.; Patrick O’Flaherty, Carey; Pamela Ferguson, Carey; John (Kimberly) O’Flaherty, Tiffin; and Christopher (Lisa) O’Flaherty, Forest; 18 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a brother, David (Rosely) O’Flaherty, Carey; and a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” O’Flaherty, Upper Sandusky.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren; a brother, William O’Flaherty; and a sister, Margaret “Mickey” Boes.
John was a 1948 graduate of Carey High School. He was the owner of O’Flaherty Marathon in Carey for the past 44 years.
He was a Korean War era U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a life member of the American Legion #344 and VFW #3759 and a member of K of C 1925, all of Carey. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing and watching his grandchildren compete in sporting events.
Friends and family will be received on Wednesday, Feb. 14, from 2-8 p.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey.
A mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey, with the Rev. J.R.. Hadnagy, OFM, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Carey, with military graveside rites conducted by Carey Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to OLC School or Simon-Kenton School Playground Fund and sent to Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay Street, Carey, OH 43316-1169.
