Mark Eley

Mark Douglas Eley, 69, of Crawford, died at 6:28 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at The James Cancer Research Hospital, Columbus.
Born Feb. 15, 1949, in Marion, he was the son of the late Elmer E. and Etta Mae (Bolyard) Eley. He married Geraldine “Gerrie” S. Cobb on Nov. 29, 1974, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Findlay. She survives in Crawford.
Also surviving are two sons, Matthew (Julia) Eley of Ft. Riley, Kan.; and Ryan (Crystal) Eley, of Carey; four grandchildren, Allyson, Madison, Laura and Luke Eley; two brothers, Charles A. (Barbara) Eley of Crawford; and David H. Eley of Galesburg, Mich.; and a sister-in-law, Sally Eley of Upper Sandusky.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, John “Suski” Eley.
He graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in 1967 and attended Bowling Green State University. He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant.
Mark was a correctional officer at the Marion Correctional Institute in Marion for 25 years. Bored with retirement, he and his wife became expediters for Tri-State Expedited Service and traveled the country for six years.
Mark was a member of VFW 3759 in Carey, American Legion 225 and AMVETS 777, both in Upper Sandusky. He enjoyed fishing and boating on Lake Erie, all types of gardening and loved tinkering with motorcycles. He was an avid Buckeyes fan. He was very proud of his sons and loved spoiling his grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 15, from 4-8 p.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 16, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. William Schultz officiating. Burial will follow at Old Mission Cemetery in Upper Sandusky, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Carey Honor Guard.

    First met Mark at East school in Upper Sandusky. Graduated with him in 1967. Worked with Mark at Marion Correctional, retired in 2015 with 28 yrs. Mark was a good person.
