Carl Toland

Carl E. Toland, 87, of Carey, died Thursday, Sept.  20, 2018, at 10 a.m. at his residence.
Born on Aug. 17, 1931, in Kirby, he was the son of the late Ralph and Nevah (Vincent) Toland. He was raised by his grandparents, Orrie and Amy Toland.
Carl married Donna A. Lucius on June 16, 1956, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Salem Township. She survives in Carey.
Also surviving are their three children, Rick (Esther) Toland, Upper Sandusky; Thomas (Laura) Toland, Upper Sandusky; and Amy (Tom) Smalley, Carey; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Toland, Upper Sandusky; nine grandchildren, Samuel and Nathaniel Toland, Daniel and Nicholas Toland, Melissa Stephan, Tyler and Joseph Toland, Ethan Smalley and Kaitlyn Harrold; six great-grandchildren, Hazel, Isla, Lily, Oliver, Ottalee and Evan; a brother, Robert (Doris) Toland and a sister, June Huf, both of Heath.
He was preceded in death by a son, David A. Toland.
Carl was a 1949 graduate of Forest High School. He was a Korean War era veteran serving in the United States Marine Corp. He owned Carl E. Toland Building and Remodeling in Carey.
He was a member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation where he was an usher and served on the Parish Council.
Carl was a member of the K of C #1925 and the American Legion #344, both of Carey. He enjoyed spending time with the McDonald’s breakfast club, reading Westerns and playing cards. His family was everything.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Sept. 23, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey. A scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey, with the Rev. J.R. Hadnagy OFM Conv., officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Salem Township, with military graveside rites being conducted by Carey Honor Guard.
