Ronald Crates Sr.

Ronald E. Crates Sr., 71, of Carey, passed away at 6:39 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020, in the emergency room at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky.
Born July 12, 1949, in Findlay, he was the son of Earl W. and Sarah (Karn) Crates. He married Nancy L. Ward on Dec. 23, 1991, and she survives in Carey.
He is also survived by three sons, Russell (Laura) Barnett of Wharton; Ronald E. (Melissa) Crates Jr. and Daniel “D.J.” (Christie) Crates, both of Carey; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Sue (Jim) Montgomery of Marquette, Neb.; Becky Crick of Bowling Green, Ky.; and Ann Fisher of Findlay.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.
Ron graduated from Riverdale High School in 1969 and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 2003 from Atlas Crankshaft in Fostoria, but he didn’t slow down. He worked various jobs including the current position as manager of Carey Mobile Home Estates in Carey. He enjoyed assisting family and friends and was considered a “Jack of all trades, master of some” by those who knew him.
He was a former member of the American Legion Post 344 and VFW Post 3759, both in Carey. When he wasn’t getting his hands dirty, he loved fishing, attending Sprint car races and watching the Buckeyes.
Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the funeral home with the Rev. Joe Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Houcktown Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Carey Honor Guard.
