Lewis W. Saltzman, 78, of Carey, passed away at 6:48 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.
Born Feb. 6, 1943, in Carey, he was the son of the late Alvin J. and Martha H. (Walter) Saltzman. He married Betty J. Darst on June 16, 1965, in Alvada. Betty preceded him in death on July 26, 2019.
Lewis was one of nine children. He is survived by all eight siblings. They are: Clair (Marlene) Saltzman of Arcadia, David (Carol) Saltzman of Alvada, Fred (Elaine) Saltzman of Alvada, Sarah (Darwin) Searfoss of Findlay, Janet (Larry) Fry of Findlay, Carol (Rick) Tong of Findlay, Mary (Dave) Tong of Arcadia and Joyce (Kendall) Thomas of Vanlue; 26 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews. Lewis was also survived by his four legged feline companion, Bella.
Lewis retired from Atlas Crankshaft in Fostoria after 25 years of employment. Feb. 14, 1998, was a very proud day for Lewis. At the age of 54, he earned his GED and his family had a wonderful day celebrating his accomplishment. Lewis was a man of faith as evidenced by his attendance at Ridge Chapel Church of the Nazarene near Carey and his many mission trips to help those in need and to spread the word of God. He also enjoyed traveling the country with his wife, Betty.
It was not uncommon to drive by Lewis’ home and see him rocking in a chair or swinging on a swing. He has been known to break a few of both over the years. Lewis loved swimming year round at the Findlay YMCA to stayed toned and in shape. He loved people. He would often stop to talk with neighbors and family or pick up the phone to check on them. He also showed his love of people by being a blood donor for years. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. It must have been why his favorite color was red.
Lewis had a passion for making maple syrup. It didn’t always go as planned, but he enjoyed sharing his Ridge Sugar Bush maple syrup with family and friends when it did.
Friends will be received from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, at Ridge Chapel Church of the Nazarene west of Carey. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Chris Cravens officiating.
