Natalina Calmes

Natalina “Jane” Calmes completed her earthly journey and was welcomed into heaven on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, at 2 p.m. She most recently was a resident of Wyandot County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Upper Sandusky.
Born Nov. 11, 1928, in Sylvania, she was the fourth child of Dominic and Carmela (Martalacci) Pieranunzio. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Josephine Roberts; and her brother, Costantino John Pieranunzio. She is survived by two sisters, Piacendina “Dina” Letizia Row and Giovannina Joan Nye, both of Carey.
Jane was a 1946 graduate of Carey High School and maintained close friendships with some of her classmates her entire life. She loved to read and was a volunteer at Dorcas Carey Public Library after she retired in 1990, after 27 years, from Westinghouse/A.O. Smith in Upper Sandusky.
Jane married Harold Edward “Pee Wee” Calmes on Feb. 26, 1949, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey. Harold preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 2015.
Surviving are her three daughters, Regina (John) Duffield of Marietta, Ga.; Carmela Happner of Romulus, Mich.; and Nancy (Bob) Holtzberger of Kenton; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Rebecca) Duffield, Casey (Terri) Duffield, Serena (Jeremy) Drummond, Natalie (Dave) Sirotin, Spencer Wagner, Steve Jacob (Morgan) Gault and Laurie Kummerer. In addition, she is survived by 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who have been so important to her.
Jane loved being a mom and aunt – family was her greatest joy. She was also a fantastic baker and her pies were legendary in the family. She was truly an extraordinary woman of great love and character.
Family and friends will be received from 2-6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey. A rosary and vigil service will be held at 6 p.m.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey with the Rev. Tom Merrill, OFM Conv., officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Carey.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Consolation School, Our Lady of Consolation Church or Dorcas Carey Public Library and sent to the funeral home.
