Thomas Gottfried

Thomas Gottfried, 79, of Cambridge, passed away Monday, July 6, 2026, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Tom was born on May 30, 1947, in Columbus, to the late Charles and Christine (Stockton) Selby. Tom was later adopted by Gerald and Katherine Gottfried, who have also preceded him in death. He married the love of his life Georgia Ealey on April 3, 1971, and they shared 55 wonderful years together until her passing on March 31, 2026. Tom is survived by his children: Devin Gottfried of Cambridge, Darren Gottfried of Upper Sandusky, and Jennifer (Audrey) Frey of Upper Sandusky; grandchildren: Alyssa, Adam, Madison, Darren Jr., Rachael, Abigail, Emma, Hudson and Wrenley; great-grandchildren: Marcus, Malcom, Luka and Arlo; siblings: Jim (Patty) Gottfried of Norwalk, Curt (Betty) Gottfried, Joan (Andy Miller) Spohn and Kay (John) Hickenbotton. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Bryan and Frank Selby.
A 1965 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Tom answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he built a career as a truck driver, a profession that reflected his strong work ethic and dependability.
Tom was a proud member of Cambridge VFW Post 2901 and attended Four-Mile Hill Church of Christ. He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether he was hunting, fishing, tending to his garden, tinkering in his garage or spending weekends browsing flea markets and antique shops, Tom was happiest when his hands and heart were busy. A devoted fan of classic westerns, he could often be found watching his favorite John Wayne movies.
Those who knew Tom will remember his quick wit and playful sense of humor. He loved making others laugh and was known as quite the jokester. He could also be wonderfully stubborn, a trait that only added to his memorable personality and determination.
Above all else, Tom’s greatest joy was his family. He delighted in spoiling those he loved, especially his beloved wife, often surprising her with beautiful jewelry and fresh flowers simply to let her know she was cherished. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with them, creating memories they will forever hold dear.
Ten years ago, Tom and his wife made Cambridge their home, allowing him the opportunity to reconnect with his biological family. That reunion became one of the great blessings of his later years, providing him with meaningful relationships and treasured time together.
Tom will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud veteran, loving father and grandfather, faithful friend and a man whose generous heart, quiet acts of kindness and unmistakable sense of humor touched the lives of everyone who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter and dedication to family will continue to live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Visitation for Tom will be on Friday, July 10, from 2 p.m. until the time of his celebration of life service at 5 p.m. at Stombaugh-Batton & Snyder Funeral Home, Carey, with the Rev. Joe Turner officiating. Military honors will be rendered at the conclusion of the services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s honor to a VFW of the donor’s choice.
