Ilene Zender

Ilene M. Zender, 69, of Carey, passed away peacefully at 1:23 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at the Hospice of Cincinnati Blue Ash Inpatient Care Center in Cincinnati.
Born June 2, 1951, in Wyandotte, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Clyde J. and Sue (DeMay) Hamner. She married Thomas Zender on Oct. 13, 1973, in Carey. Thomas survives in Carey.
She is also survived by two wonderful sons: Chad (Lezley) Zender of Wyoming, Ohio, and Zachary (Erica) Zender of Fremont. She had an amazing imagination playing with her six grandchildren: Connor, Reilly, Evan, Ian, Zane and Braden.
Ilene was number three of 11 children. Her siblings were her best friends in life and she loved spending time with them. They include seven sisters: Lynn (Tom) Perini, Polly (Mark) Fredericks, Jill (Mike) Hollway, Suzanne Binau, Rachel Bakies, Elizabeth (Stan) Jones and Wendy (Howard) Himelhoch, and a brother, Kim (Theresa) Hamner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Diana Lenhart; a brother, Tommy Hamner; and a brother-in-law, Kevin Binau.
Ilene had a beautiful voice and loved sharing her gift with others throughout the years at countless weddings, funerals and for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. She loved to travel with her family and enjoyed practicing her civic duty by being an election poll worker.
Ilene served the Transfiguration of the Lord Catholic Church in Upper Sandusky as the office manager for 35 years, retiring in June of 2020.
Friends will be received from 4:30-7 p.m. on Friday, March 5, at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, with the Rev. Tony Varghese Vattaparambil, OFM Conv., officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Spring Grove Cemetery in Carey.
