Arlene Tiell
Arlene M. Tiell, 91, of Upper Sandusky and formerly of Carey, went to her heavenly home early Easter Sunday morning, Sunday, April 4, 2021, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky.
Born May 10, 1929, in Akron, she was the daughter of Leonard H. and Mildred R. (Mann) Longanecker. She married Sylvester A. “Junior” Tiell on Oct. 11, 1947, at Our Lady of Consolation Church in Carey. Junior preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 2000.
Arlene is survived by six daughters: Ruth (Dick Gibson) Reier of Upper Sandusky, Donna (Donald) Welly of Whispering Pines, N.C., Christine Posey of Bascom, Janet Zoeller of Upper Sandusky, Karen (Michael) Bonham of Upper Sandusky and Carol (Debra Borton) Tiell of Marion; a daughter-in-law, Jan Leiter, 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Ronald W. Tiell; a grandson, Jamie Tiell; two sons-in-law, Nicklaus Reier and Dennis Zoeller; and a brother, Leonard H. Longanecker Jr.
Arlene graduated from Carey High School in 1947. She was a nurse’s aide at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky for 18 years. She loved what she did even during the blizzard when she was stuck for days and worrying about her hubby and two little girls at home. She was comforted knowing they were staying warm by the stove in the basement and enjoying soup and hot drinks.
She bowled for many years in the Wednesday Night Women’s league in Carey. Arlene was not one to sit around. Square dancing, traveling and playing cards were hobbies she enjoyed until she was slowed by blindness. Cooking, baking, crocheting, knitting and sewing were also ways she kept her hands and mind busy.
Arlene was a member of the former Salem St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem Township near Upper Sandusky and a current member of Salem St. Joseph Heritage Society and PERI Chapter 88.
Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem Township near Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Conrad Sutter, OFM Conv., officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Salem St. Joseph Heritage Society or Wyandot Memorial Hospital Hospice Fund and sent to Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay Street, Carey, OH 43316.
Online condolences may be sent to www.StombaughBatton.com.
I am so sorry to hear the loss of such a wonderful, inspiring, and caring person that Arlene was. There are so many memories of my childhood spent with her and the Tiell family. The days at Limestone Lake and winter sledding being pulled behind a truck are just a couple that come to mind. I was so glad that Dad got to visit with her just shortly before she passed. It meant a lot to him to see her. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Tiell family.
