Charles McCarthy

Charles Henry McCarthy, 89, of Upper Sandusky, passed away on Monday evening, Dec. 16, 2024, at his home with his wife by his side.
Charlie was born on Aug. 26, 1935, in Pitt Township, Wyandot County, to Frederick and Stella (Rall) McCarthy, both of whom are deceased.  He married Sharon Kinley on April 20, 1963, at St. Peter Catholic Church, and she survives.
He is also survived by his daughter, Susan and her husband Joel; daughter, Kathryn and her husband Jevon; and son, Chris; 13 grandchildren: Lindsey, Charlie, Anna, Max, Maura, Ryley (Marki), Katie (Aaron), Maya, Ethan, Madelyn, Jaya, Jadyn and Jackson; and six great-grandchildren: Dylan, Bailey, Hadley, Cade, Kennedy and Eve.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas and Edgar McCarthy; and sisters, Rosemary McCarthy and Rebecca Kinn.
He was a 1953 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959.
During his senior year of high school, Charlie started his first business, McCarthy Welding and Blacksmith Shop in Upper Sandusky, and convinced the principal to let him attend school in the mornings only allowing him the opportunity to grow his business.  After he and Sharon married, they purchased their first farm and shortly after, bought the former J.L. Foucht Quarry, and thus began McCarthy Stone Quarry. Charlie and Sharon also owned Upper Asphalt and McCarthy Concrete, and along with other business partners, formed Thyber Land Company, built the Comfort Inn in Upper Sandusky, and purchased the Riverview Inn in Tiffin.
In his free time, Charlie enjoyed boating and jet skiing on Lake Erie in the summers and skiing and snowmobiling in the winter months.
Charlie was a lifelong member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and BPOE #83.                                                    A memorial mass for Charles H. McCarthy will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 23, at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Savio Manavalan, OFM Conv., officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Upper Sandusky Color Guard.                                                                                                                                       Visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 22, from 2-5 p.m. at Lucas Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter School and/or Hospice of Wyandot Memorial and can be sent to Lucas Batton Funeral Home, 476 S. Sandusky Avenue, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
