Catherine Gibson

Catherine “Alene” Gibson, 94, of Carey, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, at her home.
Alene was born in Tymochtee Township on Aug. 24, 1929, to the late Clarence A. and Rose Lucille (Gaster) Hoepf and attended school in Carey, graduating in 1947. Alene continued her education at the Tiffin Business School where she studied bookkeeping and accounting.
Shortly after graduating, Alene married Robert L. “Jeep” Gibson on Feb. 19, 1950. Jeep preceded Alene in death on Dec. 9, 2020.
Alene loved the Village of Carey. She served as treasurer for the Carey Public Schools and was on the board of directors for the Dorcas Carey Library and Our Lady of Consolation School. Being a lifelong Catholic, Alene was an active member of Our Lady of Consolation. She volunteered with the Rosary Altar Society and was an altar linen lady. Alene could be found keeping the church grounds immaculate and working at the Shrine Gift Shop.
As a homemaker, Alene enjoyed sewing, canning and working in her flower beds. Alene was in several card clubs over the years and could be found playing bridge and pinochle. In addition to playing cards, she was also in a knitting club, or as referred to by Jeep as “The Hen Party.” She also made patchwork quilt blankets and donated them to several organizations. She supported the local food bank and donated clothes to local charities. In addition, Alene was a lifelong Red Cross donor and often volunteered to help when they were in town.
Alene is survived by her son, Tobin “Toby” Gibson of Carey; granddaughter, Makayla Gibson of South Carolina; brother, Clement E. “Clem” Hoepf of Carey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alene was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Robert James Gibson; and siblings, Clarence Hoepf Jr., Eugene Hoepf, Paul Hoepf and Vicki Smith.
Visitation will be held at Stombaugh-Batton & Snyder Funeral Home, Carey, on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 4-7 p.m. Parish prayers will be offered at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, with the Rev. Tom Merrill, OFM Conv., officiating. The burial will take place at Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey, at a later date.
